Its
history has been united to the near locality of Alarcón, which was
village during the 16th century and of which gained independence at the
end of the 19th century already. The zone keeps in the proximities remains
of old settlements prior to the romanesque. A Roman road gave with time
the main street of Alarcón, which is think that was the original
nucleus of the present town.
Legends
like the Enchanteds crag legend have echoes of the arabic presence, which
also has left its marks in some customs related to the feeding or farming.
In this respect, it can’t be forget
that the peculiar irrigation system of the zone, by means of a big wheel
- denominated azuda- that used the current to elevate the water and to make
it arrive up to the fields, it has been conserved until the last third of
the last century.
Scene of battles at different times, shows still some buildings which shows their prosperity in the 16th century when many noblemen of Alarcón and Tébar built in the Picazo their elegant houses.
The present church, of a single nave and with the greater altar oriented to Jerusalem, was built at the beginning of the 16th century and in the center of the frontal wall a square tower rises. It also stands out the lateral chapels.
Rest
of flour mills are conserved, like the one of Conejo de Alarcón or
the one of Villanueva de la Jara. Also ancestral houses like the one of
Don Juan Hidalgo Carrillo, built in 1584, are conserved.
