The Ribera del Júcar Protected Denomination of Origin has taken the leap across the ocean with its very best wines and on this occasion the event has been the International Wine Championship that is held in Canada, where the denomination has once again been recognized by the wine industry’s professionals. The denomination’s list of awards continues to soar sky-high and the turn has now been for the wines Casa de Illana and Casa de Illana Tradición, produced by Bodegas y Viñedos Illana, in Pozoamargo (Cuenca), which have taken the podium.

More specifically, Casa de Illana Tradición has walked away with the Gold Medal, while Casa de Illana has been awarded with the Silver Medal in this 18th edition of the “Selections Mundiales des Vins” Championship, which took place in Quebec, Canada, from May 31 to June 6.

Javier Prósper, President of the Ribera del Júcar Denomination of Origin and Manager of the winery that has received the awards, once again asserts that he is filled with pride after obtaining the award, as “the fact that we are advancing in leaps and bounds does not mean that we are getting used to winning prizes; as each and every one of the awards we receive are of paramount significance for us and they all have their own unique merit.” However, he also states that excelling in a country such as Canada is very important, because this is a worldwide championship, in which hundreds of wines from different points of the globe are participating and in which the jury is made up by great industry experts.

“To be recognized by the international public, in such a highly disputed contest, is indeed a great achievement,” Javier Prósper explains, adding “our international market is on the rise and we are exporting to more and more countries all the time, so Canada, on the mid-term, does represent one of our commercial goals. The fact that our first steps in Canada have also represented winning these awards is certainly a strong way to start the journey.”

This championship is one of the longest-standing and most important wine contests in the world. It was created in Canada in the year 1983 and it is managed by the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ), which has been in charge of its organization ever since the first edition.

International juries, members of which are highly recognized for their professional competence, integrity, and independence, evaluate all the wines that are presented.
