Even if we take into account the rigors of this summer, the grape has ripened in a more gradual manner than it did last year, which in turn will allow us to obtain a more balanced fruit in that pertaining to potential alcohol content and acidity.
During the past week the Ribera del Júcar Protected Designation of Origin started the yearly harvest of their fruits, forecasting a quality that will surpass that of the last year, this given the climate conditions of the current year.
Although some wineries started harvesting plots of the Small Grain Muscatel variety grape during the last week of August, it was actually during the first week of September when harvesting of the Ribera del Júcar Protected Designation of Origin really got underway and became widespread.
The climate conditions that have been endured in the area of production of the Ribera del Júcar Protected Designation of Origin, with temperatures that in some cases practically reached 40º, have been counteracted by the cool nights and the residual humidity in our soils, thanks to the clay and silt levels, which guarantee viability of the fruit in the vineyard.
Hence, this is why picking of the harvest has been pushed forward in the Ribera del Júcar Protected Designation of Origin between seven and ten days in comparison with last year’s harvest, allowing for a more gradual ripening and harvesting of the grape that will have its reward in the final product which will be more than compensated in aromas, alcohol content and acidity.
Altogether, what is expected of the harvest in the area under the protection of the Ribera del Júcar Protected Designation of Origin is that a grape volume of approximately 10 to 15% less will be picked.
